Best time to visit Yumthang The best time to take a trip to Yumthang valley commences from late February and lasts until June. Mid-June is the time when several colourful flowers blossom. However, if you want to enjoy a clear sky and brilliant view of snow-capped mountains, then the time of September - December would be an ideal time to visit this place. Another good time to visit Yumthang is from February to March when the Losar festival is celebrated. This is the time when you can experience the locals in their traditional attires, eating and drinking accompanied by amazing cultural shows.  How to Reach Yumthang Air:Gangtok airport is the nearest airports Lachung. From there regular flights are available to different destinations. You will have to take a taxi or bus from here to reach Lachung. From Lachung, transport facilities are available to get to Yumthang Valley. Rail:Lachung railway station is near to the city and is easily accessible by road. You can hire any of the available public transport to reach there. Rail network is well connected and make your journey comfortable. From Lachung, transport facilities are available to get to Yumthang Valley. Road:Lachung is a hill station and tourists usually prefer to travel through road. You can get taxi, jeeps, and buses to reach this place. Gangtok (113 km) is well connected to Lachung with road transport facility. Tourists stay at Lachung from where the valley is about an hour's drive. There are several hotels and resorts in Lachung. The Lachung Monastery which is the symbol of religious and cultural heritage is a great sigh-seeing spot. Yumesamdong (Zero Point) is a heaven personified place where you can get the most magnificent view. People can see majestic snow-covered Himalayan peaks and beautiful flowers in this place. Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is another splendid tourist attraction which has more than 24 different species of rhododendron shrubs. A variety of flora is found at the place which includes Poppies, Rhododendrons, Primulas, Saxifrages, Gentians, Iris and much more. It is the home of spotted linsang and tiger. Activities in Yumthang Lachung has a few adventure sports. It is the base camp for the trek to rhododendron sanctuary (a trek that starts from the Yumthang valley and ends at Lachen valley). At Lachen valley, you can go for skiing activities. The Yumthang Experience The localities of Lachung are mostly of Lepcha community and Bhutia- the Tibetan descent. They are famous as Lachungpas. The major spoken languages here are Nepali, Lepcha and Bhutia. Several festivals are celebrated in Lachung. Lossong is one of the most popular festivals in Lachung which is also the New Year of the Bhutia people. It is celebrated in the month of January when pooja is performed. Saga Dawa is another festival which is celebrated by the Buddhism as it is believed to be the day of Gautam Buddha. Yumthang's Cuisine Being situated at very high altitude, this place does not provide a great range of food. The mostly available dishes are fish, dal and rice. You can try the famous cuisine of Sikkim while visiting this place. Itinerary Yumthang Valley is best seen on a trip to Lachung or combined with a trip to Gangtok or Kalimpong. Reach Lachung and check into a hotel. Hire a taxi to take you to the Yumthang Valley. Follow it by lunch at a nearby restaurant. Visit Lachung chu river and the famous Lachung Monastery. In the evening, go see Zero Point and then return to your hotel and have dinner there. The next day you can see the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. You can then check out of your hotel and take a trip to Gangtok which is nearby. Tips 1. As Yumthang is situated close to the China border, the whole area is under army control. A Protected Area Permit is required to visit Yumthang which can be taken from Gangtok Tourism Office, District Administrative Center at Mangan, or at Chungthang Sub-Divisional Magistrate's Office. The tour operators also arrange for the permit.  2. Carry warm clothes in all seasons as Yumthang is located at a high altitude and it can be biting cold at any time. Also, carry a medication for high altitude sickness.  3. There are no ATMs at Yumthang so carry enough cash with you. 4. It is advisable to travel from Gangtok to Lachung and stay overnight and make the journey to Yumthang the next morning. A direct journey to Yumthang is not very feasible as it becomes dark very early around 5:30 PM and the roads are also very foggy.
