Best time to visit Thangu Valley
The best time to visit Thangu is between the months of November and June. The weather is quite pleasant at that time of the year. Summers are moderate and quite pleasant in Lachen. An annual yak race called Thangu takes place here every summer. During winter, Thangu can get quite cold. The famous Gurdongmar Lake nearby freezes completely during the winter months and looks beautiful.
How to Reach Thangu Valley
Air:The closest airport to Sikkim is the Bagdogra Airport. From here shared jeeps or buses are available to reach Thangu.
Rail:The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri and from there you can take a bus or private cars. The distance between Thangu and New Jalpaiguri is 147 Kms.
Road:You can drive from Lachen to Thangu. The distance between Thangu and Lachen is 27 Kms.

Where to Stay
Some simple accommodations are available here for the tourists in the small and comfortable beautiful village of Thangu. However, you have to generate permit from the army prior to staying the night and this permit is not easy to get.

The Thangu Valley Experience
In Thangu, a traditional administrative system is in practice to follow rules and regulation and is known as Dzumsa. In summers, the interesting annual Yak Race called the Thangu takes place at the Lachen. The population of Thangu is very less and comes up to just about a 1000 people altogether.

The place does not have much of a nightlife as there are hardly any clubs in this town.

Itinerary
Thangu is best seen on a trip to Lachen or other cities of the state such as Gangtok or Lachung. Reach Lachen via any mode of transport and the places of interest on the way are Tashi View Point, the historic Kabi Lungtsok, Phodong Monastery. Check into a hotel in Lachen or you can stay at a simple guest house in Thangu itself. After an early breakfast, take a tour of Thangu and enjoy the scenic beauty there. Then, drive to Gurudongmar Lake via Chopta Valley. Have a quick lunch at Lachen and drive to Lachung and enjoy that beautiful town. From there, you can go to Gangtok or other nearby areas such as Mangan, Rumtek, Ravangla and Namchi.
Tips
It is best to always travel with a guide. Since the vegetation is fragile, it is best to walk on designated trails. Do not littering and deposit garbage at selected places. Keep all kinds of pollutants away from streams and lakes. It is customary to leave a donation at a monastery and to circle shrines in clockwise direction. Avoid smoking, drinking and talking loudly near sacred places.
