One of the myths relays the story of a sage who used to take a bath both in the rivers Ganga and Yamuna. After a point, due to his age, he could not travel to the river Ganga for a bath daily. Then, to allow him to continue his tradition, a stream of the river Ganga appeared just opposite the river Yamuna. It is also said that the Goddess Yamuna, is the daughter of the Sun God (Surya), and the Goddess of Consciousness (Saranyu), with her brother being the Death God (Yama). Hence, people in large numbers throng over to the Yamunotri temple, and take a bath in the river Yamuna, as they believe that they will at once receive the blessings of all of the Gods, and by taking a holy dip in the river, they will wash away all of their sins. According to another myth, Saranyu (Yamuna?s mother), would never be able to make an eye contact with her handsome husband (Surya), as a result of which the Yamuna turned out to be quite ?frivolous?. Tehri Naresh, King Sudarshan Shah, in the year 1839, got the Yamunotri temple constructed. Substantial damage was delivered upon this temple, as a result of an earthquake. Maharani Gularia then took up the initiative of the reconstruction of this temple. Chardham Yatra The Chardham Yatra, as a concept, was conceived by the great Adi Shankaracharya, which consists of the four great Vaishnavite pilgrimage sites. The bigger circuit of the Chardham Yatra includes Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri, and Rameshwaram. A smaller circuit in Uttarakhand includes Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. This smaller circuit is also known as Chota Chardham. The temples at these four places in Uttarakhand are located at great heights, with spectacular views. The purpose of this pilgrimage for many is to cleanse themselves of their sins.
