About New Mangalore Port
The name given to the port 'New Mangalore' distinguishes it from the old port in the city of Mangalore which is known as 'Mangalore bunder'. The old port is located to the north of the new port and is used for the purpose of fishing and ferrying small goods and commodities. The projects were undertaken in the ear 1962 and were finally finished by 1974. The port was opened officially 11th January 1975. To conduct the administration of the port, new Mangalore trust was established in 1980. The port was completed in around 12 years.
How to Reach New Mangalore Port
NH-66 which was earlier NH-17 passes through the port. The railway station in Thokur is the nearest one, but it is convenient for passengers to get down at Suratkal Railway Station which is situated at a distance of 6 km from the port.
