Same goes for Madhubani paintings, which originated about 2500 years ago in Mithila district of Bihar. This ancient folk art is said to date back to the times of Ramayan, when king Janaka asked an artist to capture the event of Sita?s wedding with Lord Ram, on canvas. Later, the household women started making these similar paintings on the walls and floors of their houses during festivals and ceremonies.The paintings were discovered in 1934 by a British Colonial, post a massive earthquake. He found remnants of the art on the interior walls of the homes while examining the damage done. Since then, the paintings have been getting fame, and a visit to Madhubani district or Ranti village will tell you how much has this art been thriving.The paintings are done using fingers, twigs, pen nibs or matchsticks. The figures usually have prominent outlines, pointy noses and bulging protruding eyes. There is rarely any blank space left. The borders are also filled with geometrical and abstract patterns. The outline is made from rice paste, and vibrant bright colours are used to fill the insides. The colours too, are made from natural dyes.The paintings are known to portray traditional functions like weddings or festivals and the themes usually include natural elements and symbolize emotions like love, valour, devotion, fertility etc.
