Beypore Port Beypore Port is one of the oldest and the second biggest ports in Kerala and is a famous historical trading port in India. India, initially, traded directly with the Romans and Greeks and later on, with the Middle East. The Malabar coasts had Arabs visiting frequently. Also, the demand for cloth from Kerala resulted in many ships being sent from the south-east Malay ports to Malabar. This continued till 19th-century and dimmed down when the British fabric took precedence over the cloth from Kerala. Beypore also served as a halt for pilgrims going to Hajj from south-east Asia. The port is an estuarine port that was built on the land that was acquired Beypore Karippa Puthiyakovilakam in 1963. It can handle about 7000 passengers every year and about a 100,000 tonnes of cargo. The port has an approach channel, a depth of five metres along the wharf along with sheds and cranes. Beypore Shipbuilding Yard Beypore is famous for its Shipbuilding Yard where the traditional Uru boats of various sizes are created by experts. These boats are sturdy and long-lasting. The Arabs who frequently visited the Malabar Coasts found these boats extremely useful. The artisans who build these boats are called Khalasis, and they use a particular type of teakwood that is sourced from the Nilambur Forest. Some of these boats as also made from Malaysian Teakwood. According to a member of the Association of Sumerian Ships, the very first Sumerian Ships could have been built here in Beypore as it served as an essential link on the marine Silk Route. Trade between Malabar and Mesopotamia has also been documented in the ancient time. Today, it takes over 40 Khalasis to build one boat.
