Engineering of Kabini Dam Kabini dam was built in 1974 as part of the mini-hydel project in the region. The project was undertaken by the Government of Karnataka to bring about improved and stable electric power supply to the region. It is an earthen type of dam with left bank spillway. It is built on River Kabini that is a major tributary of River Cauvery that further flows into the Bay of Bengal. The dam is about 13,000 feet in length and about 167 feet in height above the river bed. It is constructed on 55 acres of land and has four spillway gates that are about 270 feet in height. Kabini Dam also provides water supply to Sagaredoddakere and Upper Nugu Dams especially during monsoons with about 28 thousand million cubic feet of water. The Kabini catchment area is about 2150 square kilometre that provides water to around 20 villages in Karnataka.
