Best time to visit Mangan
The climate in Mangan is temperate as this place lies at a lower altitude as compared to other places in Sikkim. The summer months in Mangan are April, May, June and July. The monsoon season commences during mid July, and temperatures start falling from that time. It is best to avoid the monsoons to visit the town. Winters and especially early winters are a good time to visit this place. However, be generous when you pack woolens.
How to Reach Mangan
Air:Nearest airport to Mangan is Bagdogra in West Bengal( 124 kms). The Bagdogra airport is linked to Gangtok via a helicopter service that operates between Gangtok - Bagdogra - Gangtok. You can reach Mangan from Gangtok by bus, jeep and taxis.
Rail:Nearest railway station are at Siliguri (114 km) and New Jalpaiguri (125 km) which are connected to Calcutta, Delhi, Guwahati, Lucknow and some other major cities in India.
Road:Gangtok is connected with Siliguri, Kalimpong, Gangtok etc. by road. From Gangtok , you can easily reach Mangan by bus. Regular bus services are available from there to Mangan. Private Taxis, Jeeps and Landrovers are available too.

Shared taxis are most commonly used to travel within Mangan. There is an effective bus service also available inside the town.
Where to Stay
A good number of options for accommodation are available in Mangan. Mangan might not be as popular as Gangtok among tourists or business travellers and so you will not find any luxurious hotels like in the capital city here. However, there are several hotels that you can choose from short term stay and there are a few that are good enough for long stays too. Arcady in-house, Paksam Hotel, Mount View Hotel are few of the hotels that offer a comfortable and pleasant stay.
Sightseeing in Mangan
The place is a great spot for sightseeing. The nature around and the monasteries provide a splendid view. The little colonies with their flowery patches, and the water wheels strung with bells set in exquisite miniature gardens make this place a treat to the eyes. The region is well known for the Phensong and Phodong Monastery, the latter being one of the six main monasteries of Sikkim.
Activities in Mangan
Trekking is the main activity to do here. There are travellers_Ñé groups which meet here to experience the famous Green Lachen Lake trek. The three day trek offers an amazing sight of the Mt. Siniolchu which is located at a height of 6687m. The Zemu Glacier is situated here and it is a spectacular sight. Green Lake is the place where this excursion commences. You can also take a trip to Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. This is a major tourist attraction here and the rhododendrons add to the beauty.

The Mangan Experience
Mangan is famous for its music festival which lasts for 3 days. It is celebrated from the 12th to the 14th of December every year. Mangan is also popular for a food festival, traditional music and local handicrafts, all of which make a trip to this town more interesting. When music merges with the chilly climate of Mangan during December, it creates an amazing atmosphere to be at. There are many languages including Nepali and Bhutia that are the official languages of Mangan. Several languages are spoken by the people who live in this town.

Reach Mangan via Gangtok and check into a hotel. It is best to visit Mangan Hire a guide and set out to take a trip to the beautiful monasteries in this place which are Phensong and Phodong Monastery. After this, have your lunch at a nearby restaurant and after that visit the Yumthang valley which lies here. Also see the hot springs in this town.
Return to your hotel and the next day, go for an excursion to Pentok where you can enjoy sightseeing. At Pentok Mangan gets divided by River Teesta from other villages like Lingdong, Barfok and Hee-Gyathang that lie in the Dzongu region. Leave for Lachen or Lachung from here.
Tips
It is best to always travel with a guide. Since the vegetation is fragile, it is best to walk on designated trails. Do not littering and deposit garbage at selected places. Keep all kinds of pollutants away from streams and lakes.
It is customary to leave a donation at a monastery and to circle shrines in clockwise direction. Avoid smoking, drinking and talking loudly near sacred places.
