Religious Importance of Ranka Monastery The Ranka Monastery holds great importance for the people of Sikkim as the natives consider themselves lucky to have this monastery as a part of their land. Being at this tranquil gives you a sense of relief with the monks continually uttering their prayers. The surrounding serene and peaceful environment renders a heavenly bliss to the monastery and adds to its significance. History & Architecture of Ranka Monastery The Ranka Monastery was built in 1998 CE and is the seat of Zurmang Charwang Rinpoche who, at present, is considered to be the 12th incarnation of this ancestry. Since this monastery is relatively new, it is run by young monks. It has been constructed in the typical Tibetan style of architecture and is spread along a great area offering picturesque views. Inside the sanctum lies a vast gold-plated statue of Lord Buddha in the lotus position. In addition to this, there are low tables present in the sanctum as well where the lamas read their prayer books. To make the Ranka Monastery appear attractive, there are many exquisite paintings and wall hangings adorned in the inner sanctum. Also, for the young lamas to undergo their training, there is a 2-storey building constructed along the edge of the courtyard consisting of several classrooms. Ranka Monastery Festivals The most famous festival celebrated in the monastery is Bhumchhu of which a large number of Buddhist pilgrims from Bhutan and other neighbouring areas become a part. The monastery celebrates the holy water festival every year. During this festival, on the fourteenth and fifteenth day of the Lunar month every year, a ceremony known as the Bhumchu ceremony takes place in which the followers are sanctified with holy water. The water is taken out of the monastery once every year at the time when this festival is held. The water is sealed and stored back safely after the festival gets over. Since this festival is considered to be very auspicious by the devotees, nobody ever misses a chance to become a part of it. Tens and thousands of followers gather at this place to observe the godly parade. Queues are formed by people starting from midnight to receive the heavenly water. The enthusiasm of the people who wait in long queues for this festival just to get a sip of the holy water is worth applauding. This festival goes on for three days. Apart from this, the Lohsar festival too is celebrated here with great enthusiasm.

How to Reach Ranka Monastery Ranka Monastery is situated at a distance of 20 km from Gangtok. You can hire a taxi and reach the monastery easily.
