History of Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium
Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium in Bangalore is one of the five Nehru planetariums in India, named after the first Prime Minister of the country. The other sites are located in New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Allahabad. The one at Bangalore was established in 1989 by the Bangalore City Corporation and ever since it has contributed significantly towards public entertainment and popularizing knowledge of science.
Since 1992, it has been administered by BASE (Bangalore Association for Science Education). BASE is an Autonomous Body which is registered under Karnataka Societies' Registration Act. It is principally supported by annual grants from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Karnataka. The BASE Governing Council consists of eminent scientists and educationists and senior officials of the Government of Karnataka. At present, over 2 lakhs people visit this place every year.
Shows and Programmes at Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium
Sky Theatre show
Sky Theatre is one of the main attractions of the JN Planetarium whose roof is a perfect hemispherical dome to imitate the way sky looks to us. This theatre, seating around 210 in recliners, holds shows projected on the domed roof and has unidirectional view all around. The shows are mainly short films and documentaries which impart detailed knowledge about historical and scientific facts, voyage stories, anecdotes, mostly about the constellations and galaxies. The fascinating view along with narration and music keep the audience engaged. It is a one of a kind experience which only few places in India offer.The shows keep changing from time to time. The name of the current shows and their synopsis is always available on their official website. At present, the shows running in the Sky Theatre are "Our Solar System" and "Exploring the Universe".

Mirror Dome shows
The mirror dome projection hall was renovated and refurbished with a seating capacity of 40 and air condition to use it for academic as well as show purposes. Right now, the two shows running here are 'Natural Selection' telling the entire history and analysis behind Darwinian Theory and 'Dawn of the Space Age' which is about the story of mankind's journey from the very initial attempts at space study till today's successful satellite and spacecraft launches.However, this is not open for the public on a daily basis and can only be availed with prior request.
Exhibition Hall
The Exhibition Hall is a gallery full of knowledge about space, stars and everything else about astronomy - meteors, asteroids, eclipses and so on. The place is full of space-related scientific facts and trivia all around.
Science Park
The Science Park is a campus inside the premises of the planetarium where there are more than 40 scientific exhibits which are interactive and explain difficult and complex concepts of physics and astronomy in simple, game-like manners.
Know Your Stars
This is a special programme conducted only on the first Sunday evening of every month. It is part of a lecture in the Sky Theatre about constellations where the visitors can later gaze at the stars through telescopes and binoculars and try identifying them with the help of the star chart provided.
Facilities Provided at Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium
1. Food stalls, clean drinking water, washrooms and souvenir shops are all available on the premises. Parking is also available.There are wheelchair and resting room facilities for the physically challenged.
2. The planetarium also welcomes children from special schools on any working day except for the weekends.
3. The planetarium holds special lectures on the days of astronomical importance like solar and lunar eclipse, equinoxes and solstices, super moon, visibility of any planet or meteor and so on.
4. Advanced booking of tickets can be made on Book My Show website or app.
5. Block booking is also facilitated for the Sky Theatre shows. For students, the rate is INR 7000 per show seating 200 children or less, and for the general public, it is INR 12,000 for the same. However, the time slot options are only 10:30 AM and 11:30 AM shows.
How to Reach Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium
Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is located in the heart of the city, only 2 km from the railway station and 1.5 km from the Dr. BR Ambedkar metro station. It can also be reached by the public buses, cabs or hired cars.

Tips
1. Don't carry eatables inside the projector halls.2. If you are taking a group of students, it is advisable to arrive an hour early than the show timing.3. Maintain silence in the halls and keep the surroundings clean.4. If there are very few visitors, the show can get cancelled so make a phone call beforehand.5. On days there are too many visitors, authorities do not provide more than 2 tickets per person. So, if you have a bigger group, more than one individual might have to stand in the queue.
