Thenmala, First Ecotourism Destination
India's first planned eco-tourism destination, Thenmala, is situated in Kollam district in Kerela. It?s a small village located in the foothills of the Western Ghat mountains. The Thenmala eco tourism shares its resources with the Chenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary. For those who don't know what ecotourism is, it's a tourism intended to offer tourists an insight into the impact of human beings on the environment and to foster a greater appreciation of our natural habitats.
The Thenmala dam is a popular eco-tourism destination and has created the largest reservoir in the state, making the dam and its surroundings a favourite picnic spot. One can do various activities like boating (on the lake formed by the reservoir), Butterfly Safari, Trekking, Hiking, Night Camping. One can have a walk in the leisure zone, a forest garden. Other Attractions include the Pallaruvi Waterfalls located in the vicinity; one can enjoy the majestic view and the lush greenery surrounding the fall. There is a Deer Rehabilitation Centre nearby, where people can see deer in a forest setting and can have a peep into the traditional tree house. created by the forest dwellers.
One Day Itinerary
Day 1:Start your day early and straight away head for a day trip to the ecotourism. You can buy the day's trip package at the eco-tourism centre and then leave your day to them, and they will make sure that they convert it into an unforgettable day. The package includes Butterfly Safari, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, River cCrossing a walk into the forest garden (Leisure Zone), Soft Trekking etc. It includes Lunch and dinner as well, so you can devour the tasty South Indian food. A Musical Dancing Fountain at the end of the trip is the perfect thing to call it a day.
Day 2: After having your Breakfast you can head for the Pallaruvi Waterfalls situated at a distance of 16 km From Thenmala and enjoy the silvery water of the fall and the majestic beauty of its surroundings. Spend your evening by the waterfall with you loved ones.

There are small restaurants which mostly provide, snacks and beverages and forest produce. Leisure zone within the eco-park has few options to eat as well.

Thenmala can be visited throughout the year. However, April to June is quite hot with temperature ranging from 20 to 36 degrees Celsius. Thenmala experiences heavy rainfall during monsoon. Winters are pleasant with temperature ranging from 16 to 32 degrees Celsius.

Thenmala in Summer (March - May)
Summers are hot with temperature reaching up to 39 degrees Celcius. May is the hottest month. It is advisable to avoid visiting Thenmala during this time.
Thenmala in Monsoon (June - September)
It rains heavily in Thenmala when the monsoon is at its peak, making it quite difficult to travel during this time. The average rainfall is 2600 to 3000 mm. However, if you don't mind the rainfall, this can be a good time to experience the lush greenery of this place.

The winter season is not very cold with maximum temperature going to 32 degrees Celcius and minimum to 16 degrees Celcius. Night being relatively cooler than the day. January is the coldest and driest month. This is the ideal time to visit Thenmala.
