Legend of Baralacha Pass The word Baralacha means summit, and the area has crossroads from Spiti, Ladakh, Zanskar and Lahaul meeting there. In ancient times, the pass was a part of the trade route and was regularly used by travellers. The Bhaga River lies towards the northwest, and the Chandra River flows towards the southeast of the mountain pass. The beautiful emerald lake, known as the Suraj Tal or the Sun Lake, which is the source of the river Bhaga, is located below the Baralacha. According to legends, there were two lovers Chandra and Bhaga, who were the children of the Moon and Sun God respectively. To marry each other and live together forever, they decided to climb up the Baralacha Pass, and from there, they ran in opposite directions. Since Chandra was the active and smart one, he easily found her way and reached Tandi. Bhaga also made his way through the narrow gorges to Tandi, and both of them met and finally got married.
