Literally meaning Shiva's Sea, this picturesque town with its rocky terrain and gushing waterfalls is a popular tourist destination with Gaganachukki, Shivanasamudra waterfall being the ones you don't want to miss. This calmness is infused with subtle hints of spirituality, given the Ranganatha temple here, which attracts pilgrims. An unexplored destination with not much crowd and lots of waterfalls to soak under.  What's not so Great? Not reachable by train or flight. Get in touch with your spiritual side The Kaveri river forms the backbone of the spiritual life in the state of Karnataka, and at every point where the Kaveri splits, there is a Ranganathaswami temple (Avatar of Vishnu). The first one is located at Srirangapatna, the second and unique one at Shivanasamudram and the third one at Tiruchirapally. The one at Shivanasamudram is known as s the Madhyaranga and is the only one out of three to have a seven headed snake behind Vishnu. The other temples have a five headed snake. This temple belongs to the Chola period of around 9th Century AD, and the structure is very well preserved till today. There are extravagant celebrations and a grand pooja held at this temple on the occasion of Vaikunth Ekadashi, the 11th day of the waxing moon in the month of Magha on the Hindu lunar calendar.

Itinerary Day 1:Reach Shivanasamudram in the morning and explore the sights and smells of the city. Since this city is relatively small, walking is the best way to get around, though public transport like auto-rickshaws is available for local transportation. In the evening, leave for the Ranganathaswami temple, located in the city centre and take time to explore the massive temple complex. Many markets around the temple sell various traditional goods like wood and brassware as well as different types of local food, religious items and toys. Day 2: Leave in the morning for the Shivanasamudram falls located some distance from the city. You can hire a taxi or take a bus to this location. Since this is a popular picnic spot, you can spend the day here. You can also carry lunch or eat at one of the many small restaurants located close to the waterfall, making it a whole day out. There are also some forests surrounding this waterfall making it an ideal spot for bird watching and observing different types of butterflies in their natural habitat.

Shivanasamundram Falls in Monsoon (June - September) Monsoon starts in June and continues until September and Shivanasamudram receives a considerable amount of rainfall. However, during this time most of the trek routes close to the waterfalls are closed due to heavy rains. If you plan to do some adventure activities, this is not the time to visit. Shivanasamundram Falls in Winter (November - February) Winter starts from November till February and the temperature can drop to about 16 degrees Celcius or lower during this time. It is the perfect time to visit this town since the waterfalls and rivers are in their full glory, and the vegetation has regenerated post the monsoons making the natural scenery a delight to watch.
