Vizhinjam Beaches
This little fishing town is famous for its pristine beaches- the Lighthouse beach, the Hawah beach and the Samudra beach. The three beaches together form the crescent of Kovalam. The palm-fringed beaches are covered in white sands that glisten in the shining sun. Lounging languorously on these tranquil beaches is the perfect way to revitalize and rejuvenate your mind when you take a pause from the hectic schedules of daily life. The Lighthouse beach has been named after the lighthouse that stands tall on the beach. The view offered by the lighthouse is extraordinary- a panoramic view of the entire village surrounded by azure waters. The Hawah beach is also known as the Eve beach and has one of the best scenic views of the village.
Vizhinjam Rock Cut Cave
The Vinzhinjam Rock Cut Cave is one of the most popular attractions of the village and is an exhibition of unique and uninhibited talent. The temple houses beautifully and intricately carved sculptures of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The charm of the temple is in its unfinished sculptures that leave you curious and yearning for more.
Vinzhinjam Marine Aquarium
The Vinzhinjam Marine Aquarium is a must visit attraction in this village. The aquatic life preserved here is indeed a treasure trove of marine wealth. You will find many species of fish like angel fish, clown fish, cowfish, boxfish, wrasses, seahorses, eels, etc. There are corals reef tanks and various other aquatic animals too.
The Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium is famous for its unique technique of Image Pearl production. Using this technique, a mould made of shell cement and any random shape is embedded into the pearl oyster. After 2-3 months, the pearl oyster will have produced a shiny and gorgeous pearl in the shape of the mould!
The aquarium stays open to visitors from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day, including weekends and public holidays.
The entry fees children between the age of 4 and 14 is INR 10 per child and INR 20 per person over the age of 14.
History of Vizhinjam
Vinzhijam was originally the administrative capital of the Ay Dynasty during the period between 850 AD and 1400 AD. Later, it was the interest of dispute between the Chera Dynasty and the Chola Dynasty for years with the Chola kings emerging as the rulers. Recent explorations led to the discovery of the remnants of a fort which was built under the rule of the Ay Dynasty somewhere between the 8th and 9th century, making it one of Kerala's oldest forts. Remains of an educational institution known as 'Kanthalloor Sallai' which was also built by the kings of the Ay Dynasty between the 9th and 10th century.
Best time to visit Vizhinjam
The winter season is ideally the best time to visit Vinzhinjam. The temperature ranges between the low of 16 degrees Celsius and the high of 34 degrees Celsius. It is the best time for beach hopping, sightseeing and touring the village.
The summers experience a high of over 37 degrees Celsius but is a great time to visit if you want to avoid crowds. Visiting in monsoons will give you a chance to witness Vinzhinjam in its rain washed glory with blossoming flora all around.
How to Reach Vizhinjam
The Trivandrum Central Railway Station is located about 15 km from Vinzhinjam and is the closest railhead to the city. This railway station is well connected to all major cities in and around Kerala. One can hail an auto or a cab outside the station which will take you to Vinzhinjam in no time and at affordable rates. The KSRTC Vinzhinjam Bus Depot has buses plying in and out of Vinzhinjam quite frequently. Buses connect different spots of the village and the bus depot is a stop for many luxury buses managed by famous bus operators.
