Mythological Importance
The Hindu mythology says that the Gods and demons churned the ocean in search of the amrut . In this process, first came the poison followed by amrut . Shiva drank the whole poison so that it doesn't spread across the universe . Parvati held his throat tightly so that it doesn't spread in his body. The poison was there in the throat and made it blue . That's why, Shiva is also known as Neelakantha . Nanjanagud in Kannada means "the place where Nanja resides" .
Construction of the temple
During 11th â?? 12th century, The Chola kings were the one who were involved in the construction of the temple . Later on, required additions were done by the Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara kings. The temple was also renovated by the Hoysala kings. It is known that Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan both had close associations with this temple. The Wodeyar kings of Mysore also contributed in the renovation of the temple.
