Mythological Importance The Hindu mythology says that the Gods and demons churned the ocean in search of the amrut . In this process, first came the poison followed by amrut . Shiva drank the whole poison so that it doesn't spread across the universe . Parvati held his throat tightly so that it doesn't spread in his body. The poison was there in the throat and made it blue . That's why, Shiva is also known as Neelakantha . Nanjanagud in Kannada means "the place where Nanja resides" . Construction of the temple During 11th â?? 12th century, The Chola kings were the one who were involved in the construction of the temple . Later on, required additions were done by the Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara kings. The temple was also renovated by the Hoysala kings.
