History of Colaba Causeway In 1796, the southern-most tip of Mumbai had been declared a cantonment area and as a result, the heart of the city - the Fort area and the surrounding parts were getting overcrowded. More and more people shifted there for better access and employment and soon it headed towards encroachment. Many accidents of boat-capsizing due to overloading led the Government to decide on the construction of the land-link. Added to the dire necessity was that the then Governor of Bombay, Lord Elphinstone built his residence on Malabar Hill and it became urgent to complete the construction of the Causeway. The Colaba Causeway was built by the British East India Company connecting the last two remaining islands of the seven which were yet to be connected with the mainland. The construction of the Colaba Causeway was completed in 1838 under the command of Sir Robert Grant, yet another governor of the city. It was later modified and widened in 1861 and then again in 1863. In 1873, Stearns and Kitteredge introduced horse-drawn tram-cars were introduced to ferry people across.

How to Reach Colaba Causeway The easiest way to reach Colaba Causeway is to take the train from Bandra station to Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Mumbai is a city well connected with local trains, but Colaba does not have any immediate train station next to it. The CST Terminus is the nearest one, from where you can take a cab to reach the place or walk it taking Dr Dadabhai Naoroji road which is also dotted with shopping stalls. In any case, the Colaba Causeway is a popular destination and cabs will take you here from any part of the city.

Tips Do not give in to first-time prices with the hawkers. Dig in deeper because the roadside stalls have a brilliant and diverse stock, but do not forget to bargain. Half of the originally quoted price will typically be the selling price. Also, carry cash because the temporary shops will not accept any plastic money.
