History of Namgyal Monastery The monastery was founded as Phende Lekshe Ling in the year 1564 by the 3rd Dalai Lama, Gyalwa Sonam Gyatso. Namgyal was the name given to the monastery in 1571 to honour the female deity, Namgyalma. After the Potala Palace was constructed, Namgyal was present in the red section on the top of the building in Lhasa. After the Tibetan revolt in 1959, the monastery was moved to Mcleod Ganj where it sustains even today. There are about 200 monks present in the monastery today who represent all the four main simple Tibetan traditions. Following the advice of the current Dalai Lama, Namgyal set up its branch in New York in 1992 including the Namgyal Monastery Institute of Buddhist Studies within. Blessing of Cyberspace was offered as a part of the twenty-four hours in Cyberspace event by the monks of the Institute on 8th February 1996. A Tibetan monastery called Gendhen Phelgyeling was set up in Bodhgaya in 1998 with 45 monks.
