Itinerary
A week long trip will help you explore the best of this area, but if you want to explore more of the place, at least 2 weeks will be required. A lot of time goes in travelling from one place to another.
The recommended route to include the sanctuary in Leh isë_Leh-Pangong Tso-Hanle-Tso Moriri-Tso Kar-Leh. Pangong Lake is just 150km from Leh, and because of ease of accessibility, the most popular with tourists. About 150 km south of Pangong is the village of Hanle which has newly opened up to tourists. It has a monastery, and the Indian Astronomical Observatory, known to be the world's highest observatory at 4,500 meters. Tso Moriri is much more farther from Leh and requires about two days of travel. Close to Tso Moriri is another lake called Tso Kar which houses rare species of birds like the black headed goose. Travelling to just 3 lakes out of the many available takes at least 4-5 days in total. More lakes are dropped into the itinerary for the truly adventurous and is offered by specialist tour guides.
Tips
1.Prior permission to visit the Protected Area required from the District magistrate Leh. It is better to make arrangement of accommodation in advance from Leh.
2.Be prepared for traffic jams due to upturned, sometimes abandoned army vehicles.
