This city was initially known as ?Sakchi?. J.R. D. Tata was inspired by Thomas Carlyle who said, "The nation which gains control of iron soon acquires the control of gold." Thus, he believed that a strong base in steel production would affect the economy of India mainly and it will progress. He got in touch with geologists and with their help he located the most suitable in India to set up an industry. In April 1904, a site rich in iron, coal, limestone and water was discovered by Dorabji Tata and his companions Shapurji Saklatvala and C.M. Weld. They found all of these in a village called Sakchi on the Chhota Nagpur Plateau. The construction of the steel plant began in the year 1908 and completed on 16 February 1912.
