The Idol at Bada Ganpati
The construction of an idol of such enormity was by no means an easy feat. An assortment of materials was gathered for the constitution, including limestone, bricks, methi dana, certain masalas, as well as soil collected from seven holy sites across the North Indian cities of Mathura, Ayodhya, Kanchi, Maya, Avantika, Kashi, and Dwaraka.
The metallic frame that surrounds the idol is intricately carved into an amalgam of gold, silver, copper, brass, and iron. To make sure that the towering structure was solid, mud from the stables of elephants, horses, and cows were added to the mixture. Moreover, a special sacred powder known as Panchatantra was also used in the mixture of materials that formed the building material for this iconic idol of Lord Ganesha.
Legend of Bada Ganpati
Although some believe that the temple was established by the then Queen of Holkar dynasty, there is a legend about Shri Dadhich, a resident of the nearby city of Avantika or Ujjain who had a vision of the Lord Ganesha in his dream. Taking it as a spiritual blessing, he decided to pay tribute to the Lord by building a gigantic idol of Him, in the hopes that the God will bless him.
