Legends of Ugra Tara Temple
The temple of Ugra Tara has a lot of stories and myths attached to it. Legend goes to say that, when Goddess Sati burned herself because she was humiliated by her father during a yagna as she had come uninvited and unannounced; her husband Lord Shiva flew in a rage. He carried her body and performed tandava. That?s when Lord Vishnu came to help and cut her body with his mighty Ashoka Chakra. Her navel is said to have fallen at this spot where Ugra Tara temple was constructed later.
Another story suggests that Yama (God of Hell) complained to Lord Brahma that no person was sent to hell from the Kamarupa area because of its sacredness. Lord Brahma in turn went to Lord Shiva, and so Goddess Ugra was asked to send away her people. Later, Goddess Ugra sent her army to bring back her people. The army met Sage Vashishtha on its way back and disturbed his meditation. In anguish and rage, the sage cursed Goddess Ugra and Lord Shiva. Thence, all sadhnas were given up in Kamarupa and people started worshipping the Goddess. Also, Goddess Ugratara is worshipped in Buddhism.

The best time to visit Ugra Tara temple is during Durga Puja. The whole temple lights up with zeal and fervour. Several buffaloes are sacrificed to appease the Goddess. We recommend you to visit at the time of the celebrations to have a memorable trip.
