History of the Batasia Loop
The motive behind creating the magnificent pathway of Batasia Loop was rooted in easing navigation around the terrain of Darjeeling. Darjeeling's toy train cannot handle as high a gradient as 140 metres after Ghum, which is the highest railway terminal in the country. The Batasia loop was built as an engineering requirement to reduce the gradient of the slope of the mountains where the tracks are laid. The Batasia Loop was commissioned in 1919 keeping this geographical glitch in mind. Owing to the picturesque route it follows, it has now become one of the most sought-after destinations on Darjeeling as well.

The Batasia Loop is lined with a number of other local attractions as well, which garners tourists from all around the country. The Eco Garden in Batasia has features about organic farming and plantations. There are many rare and unheard of species like Rhododendrons, silver firs and Gingko Biloba that call the gardens their home. There is also a War Memorial to honour the sacrifice of Gorkha soldiers of Darjeeling, with a cenotaph and a statue of a Gorkha soldier. The War Memorial was sanctioned on 22nd March 1995 and is an important checkpoint of the Batasia Loop. Rising from the bosom of the mountains, you can also view the Kanchenjunga in all its glory from here. It is a popular tourist destination with a host of activities for visitors such as telescopic viewing of the nearby mountains, photography in traditional attire among others. Other than these, Batasia Loop offers a charming view of Darjeelings landscape which is enchanting in its own right.
