History of Bhakra Dam
The dam is 741 ft high and has four spillway gates. Preliminary works for the Dam started in 1946 while the construction commenced in 1948. Jawaharlal Nehru poured the first bucket of concrete into the foundations of Bhakra on 18 November 1955. The dam was completed by the end of 1963. Initially, the project was started by Sir Louis Dane, the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab. However, due to some reasons construction was put to a halt. Post independence the work was continued by the chief architect Rai Bahadur Kunwar Sen Gupta.
Prime Minister Nehru in the dedication ceremony of the dam to the nation said, "This dam has been built with the unrelenting toil of man for the benefit of mankind and therefore is worthy of worship. May you call it a Temple or a Gurdwara or a Mosque, it inspires our admiration and reverence."
Facts About Bhakra Dam
Multi-Purpose Project:It aims to prevent floods in Satluj-Beas River and provides water for irrigation to the adjoining states of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan. It also is a provider of Hydro-Electricity which is generated by the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, and Delhi.
Management:The administration, maintenance, and operation of Bhakra Nangal Project are undertaken by Bhakra Management Board (BMB). Bhakra Management Board was renamed Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on 15 May 1976 to manage dams on river Beas as well.
How to Reach Bhakra Nangal Dam
It takes around 2.5 hours to travel from Bilaspur to Bhakra Nangal Dam. Also, Nangal Bus stand is 20 km from Bhakra. Bus services are quite prominent, and roads are well connected to the dam.
