History of the Prag Mahal
Prag Mahal has derived its name from a popular King Rao Pragmalji II. The construction began in 1865 and got completed in 1879. The glorious Mahal was designed by Colonel Henry Saint Wilkins in the Italian Gothic style and was commissioned by Rao Pragmalji II. Many other Italian artisans offered their help during the construction of the Mahal. The local Kutchi builder community was also involved in the creation of Prag Mahal along with Colonel Wilkins. The workers who helped construct the royal fort were paid gold coins.
The total cost of the palace came to a whopping INR 3.1 million. Building the fortress was the dream of Pragmalji II, but he died before the construction got completed. Prag Mahal also suffered huge damage in the earthquake of 2001. Both the Aina Mahal as well as the Prag Mahal deteriorated in the event. One can still see its effects in the form of cracks on these buildings. After five years, the Prag Mahal was attacked by burglars who damaged the building and also stole priceless artefacts from the premises.
Architecture of Prag Mahal
The architecture of the palace is in the Gothic style made of Italian marble and sandstone brought from Rajasthan. The main hall is filled with decaying taxidermy, and the Durbar hall has chandeliers and classical statues in it. There are Corinthian pillars placed around the beautiful palace. The popular Jali work is also done on the walls and windows that depict European plants and animals.
A 45-foot high tower is standing straight there with a clock, from where visitors can have the view of the entire Bhuj city. Prag Mahal also has a small temple built in the courtyard just behind the main edifice with beautifully carved stonework. The bell tower is an astonishing feature of the lavish palace.
Best time to visit Prag Mahal
The ideal time to pay a visit to Prag Mahal is during the winter months from October to March. During this time, the weather remains cool and makes the trip pleasant.
How to Reach Prag Mahal
It is easy to reach the palace as it is easily accessible in Bhuj. State buses are excellent means of transport and can help you reach most areas of the district. Many sleeper buses leave for Bhuj between 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM and arrive there between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM the next morning. There are non-sleeper buses available as well. You can also hire a private jeep or a taxi to reach the Prag Mahal.
