History of Pathiramanal
Pathiramanal also known as Anantha Padmanabhan Thoppu, was under the private ownership of Thaimattathil family until the late seventies. It was purchased by Chevalier ACM Anthraper, from M/s Bheemji Devji Trust of Cochin. However, after the land reform acts of 1979, the island came under the government of India. Later, it came to be managed by the Tourism Department of India. Till late 70s, 14 families resided on the land but after government possession, they were relocated to the adjoining region of Muhamma panchayat. The island at present is uninhabited and only used for tourism purposes.
Bird Watching at Pathiramanal
The exquisite island is home to around 50 species of migratory birds and 91 species of local birds. A must visit spot for avid bird watchers; the island can also fascinate simple tourists with its wide variety. The exotic birds include Pintail Ducks, Common Teal, Night Heron, Cormorant, Darter, Indian Shag, Purple Heron, Cattle Egret, Indian Pond Heron, Little Egret, Bronze-winged Jacanas, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Whistling Duck, Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Little Cormorant, Whiskered Tern etc.

Keeping the hot and humid temperature of the place in mind, we suggest you to visit between the months of December and March as the weather is most pleasant at this time.
How to Reach Pathiramanal
Pathiramanal is an island situated in the middle of Vembanad Lake. It is around 2 kms from Muhamma boat jetty and 13 kms from Alappuzha. It can be reached in a 30 minutes speed boat trip or a 2 hours motorboat ride. If you want to prolong your stay, you can hire one of the houseboats and spend the night next to the island in the waters.
