History of the Ashram In the year 1895, British Indian Army Captain James Henry Sevier and his wife Charlotte Sevier had an encounter with Swami Vivekananda in England. They were so impressed with Swami's vision that they accompanied him through his travels to Switzerland, Germany, and Italy for nearly nine months. The Advaita Ashram found its roots in Vivekananda's vision of establishing a facility similar to the retreat for monks in the Alps, which he had a chance of visiting whilst he was recuperating. In keeping with the same, James and Charlotte moved to India in 1896 with the aim of finding a place near Almora, and set up an Ashram. There they rented a bungalow for the next two years worked for ceaselessly for the Ashram. The Mayawati Ashram was then established on 19 March 1899 as a part of the Ramakrishna Math.
