Legend of Sela Pass
According to the legend, Jaswant Singh Rawat, an Indian army sepoy fought alone against the Chinese soldiers near the Sela Pass during the Sino-Indian war in 1962. A tribal woman named Sela brought food and water to him but killed herself on seeing his mutilated body. The brave Jaswant Singh was later posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.
Best time to visit Sela Pass
Even though Sela Pass is open throughout the year, the best months to visit are October, November, March, April and May as there are less chances of the route being snowed-in due to the snowfall. The temperatures can range from anywhere between 20 to 5 degrees Celsius, hence adequate warm clothing is necessary. During these months, the Pass and the Lake are at their most beautiful with snow covered mountains, forests and the frozen lake making for a wonderful sight.
How to Reach Sela Pass
Air:The nearest airport is at Guwahati which is 480 km from Tawang and is well connected to all major cities of the country. One can hire a car or catch a bus till Tezpur for further journey till Tawang. Alternatively, helicopter services are available from Guwahati till Tawang daily at the cost INR 400 for adults and INR 2500 fro children.
Rail:The nearest railhead is at Tezpur. It is well connected to Tawang and Bomdila by road and one can hail a Tata Suma or a bus till Bomdila or Tawang.
Road:Tawang is well connected to all major cities of the North-East by ASPRTC buses and some more private buses. The most convenient way is by hiring a cab as you can stop at Sela Pass & Lake before carrying on to Tawang.
