History of Srisailam Dam
The foundation of the Srisailam Dam was laid down in the year 1960 with a focus on it being a power generation project. After 21 years of meticulous work, the dam saw completion in the year 1981 when in 1987 the second phase of construction was undertaken to convert the site into a multipurpose project with a capacity to generate additional 770MW of power.
Architecture of Srisailam Dam
The imposing structure of Srisailam Dam is perched on a massive height of 300 metres above sea level. The edifice itself is 145 metres in height and 512 metres in length. It has a capacity to hold a massive volume of 178.74 Tmcft and up to water level of 885 feet, and 12 individual radial crest gates provide an outlet for the same. Equipment-wise, the Srisailam Dam has six reversible 150 MW Francis pump-turbine systems on the left side of the river bank, while on the right side there are seven 110 MW Francis turbine generators. The entire assembly provides water to an area of 2000 square kilometres.
