Snow Leopard Capital of India Nicknamed so for being host to an exclusive wildlife reserve for the rare breed of snow leopard, Hemis is reclusive but beautiful town, situated in the Leh-Ladakh region of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. However, snow leopards aren't the only thing in Hemis. Besides the wide range of fauna present in the Hemis Wildlife Sanctuary, the Hemis town is also famous for its serene Buddhist Gompas [monasteries]. So, if you want a slice of both adventure and spiritualism on the same platter, go beyond Leh & Ladakh, and try Hemis.    

Itinerary Day 1 -Reach Hemis, preferably by noon and take some rest. In the evening, you can go to the main markets for a stroll, especially where you can buy precious curios and souvenirs, that you can take home for yourself and your family.Day 2 -The 2nd day should be the ideal time for starting your trip through Hemis. You should begin ideally with Hemis Gompa, an astounding creation of Buddhist culture, not very far from Hemis Wildlife Sanctuary, a favorite tourist cum wildlife hotspot.Day 3 -This day can be reserved for a visit to the various Gompas in Hemis, whether Gotsang or Stakna, that is up to your preference

Restaurants and Local Food in Hemis Hemis shares cuisine with Leh and is dominated by the same elements amd influences. Hence the essentials of the cuisine here arethukpa(thick soup with vegetables),Pava(made of sattu) ,khambir (local bread), sandwiches made with apricot jam, steamed dumplings stuffed with meat or vegetables with chili sauce ,Skieu(made with veggies, mutton and flour).

Apr-Junis the best time to visit Hemis Summer season is the best season for a visit to Hemis. The months when Hemis is ideal for a trip is for the months of April - June. Monsoon is also a good time to visit, while winter season, with freezing cold climate, is seriously the best time for a visit. Weather in Hemis Loading... Hemis in Summer (April - June) This is the most advisable time for a trip to Hemis. The area is pleasant for a visit at this time, with temperatures rarely going beyond 28 degrees Celcius. Hemis in Monsoon (July - September) This is not exactly a good time to visit Hemis, owing to the frequent landslides, coupled sometimes with cloudbursts and torrential rainfall. Although the cool breeze and pleasant climate do allure some visitors in this offseason.    Hemis in Winter (October - March) This is the least ideal time for a visit to the site, owing to the harsh and freezing winters, which can drop to as low as -30 degrees Celcius.
