History of Mangalgiri Mangalagiri has a long and illustrious history attached to its name. The city finds a mention in the capture of Kondavidu by Timmarasu around the year 1520. A stone near the Garudalvar has inscriptions which pertain to the reign of Vijayanagara Empire around the year 1538. Mangalagiri formed a part of the Golconda Nawab's empire for quite a few years as well and was plundered by Hyder Jung in 1780. As the temple was recovering from this attack, it was looted again in the year 1816 by a gang of Pindaris. Mangalagiri saw peaceful days during the time of Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Nayudu who ruled the place from Amaravati.  The gopuram of the Mangalagiri temple at the foot of the hill was constructed by Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Nayudu in 1807 to 1809 and is a classic example of Vishwakarma Sthapathis. There was a huge water scarcity in Mangalagiri when the municipal chairman Goli Gopala Rao brought water to the town through water pipelines. He was deemed "Apara Baghiratha" for his srvices to the community. Mangalagiri - The Auspicious Hill Mangalagiri is one of the 8 important Mahakshetrams or sacred places in India where Lord Vishnu manifested himself. There are three Narasimha Swamy temples in Mangalagiri - Panakala Narasimha Swamy on the hill, Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy at the foot of the temple and Gandala Narasimha Swamy at the top of the hill. The Magalagiri Hill itself looks like an elephant and has an interesting legend associated with itself. A king by the name of Pariyatra had a son called Hrasva Srungi who was on a tour of all holy places in the country so as to regain normal bodily stature, and Mangalagiri was their final stop. There, they stayed for a period of three years and performed penance in the praise of Lord Vishnu. Pariyatra sent over his men to take him back to the kingdom and rule over his people, but Hrasva Srungi took the shape of an elephant to become the abode of Lord Vishnu who is locally known as Panakala Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy.
