History of Lajpat Nagar
Lajpat Nagar was formed after the India - Pakistan partition in 1947. The oldest residents of Lajpat Nagar are mostly Hindu and Sikhs who relocated from Pakistan and established this colony in 1954. This settlement, occupied by Multanis and Sindhis was initially known the Cheap Cantonment. After partition, the people who relocated would stay at refugee camps in Purana Qila, Delhi till they were allocated plots/ houses to live.
These plots were very basic 60x15 foot area houses with asbestos roof. They were one-story houses that were constructed like army barracks. The residents upgraded and built multi-storied homes as and when they could. A part of the colony was also utilized for Bengali Widows as a refugee camp. We now know this colony as the Kasturba Ashram.
The 'Servants of the People Society' that was founded by Lala Lajpat Rai in Lahore also moved to Lajpat Nagar in 1960. Today, the colony serves as a refugee camp for many citizens from the Middle East who travel to India as medical tourists for affordable and quality health treatments.
