How to Reach Kumbh Mela 2019
During the Kumbh Mela, temporary railway stations are created around the fairgrounds to facilitate the entry of the massive number of pilgrims that come to Allahabad for this holy event, with Prayag Ghat station being within walking distance of the holy Sangam. The Allahabad Airport, which only facilitates one flight a day from Delhi during the rest of the year, sees many airline services like Spice Jet and Jet Airways operating multiple flights for the mela. Devotees are also known to arrive by charter flights. Temporary roads are created within the grounds for ease of travel.
Air:On a regular basis, Allahabad airport receives one flight from Delhi every day. However, during the Kumbh Mela, there are temporary flight services from major Indian cities to this airport.
Rail:Allahabad is the headquarters of the North-Central division of Indian railways and is very well connected by train to most major cities in India. During the Kumbh Mela, temporary railway stations are set up across the fair to aid the pilgrims coming from other regions of the country.
Road:Allahabad falls on the NH-2 which runs from Delhi to Kolkata and is part of the Golden Quadrilateral - so the road connectivity from Delhi/Agra/Kanpur/Varanasi/Patna/Kolkata is great. The highway is smooth and very well maintained, and not at all crowded. Once within Allahabad, one can avail services of auto-rickshaws or cycle rickshaws to reach the venue. App-based cab service Ola is also available in the city.
Where to Stay
The Kumbh Mela sees devotees setting up temporary shelters like tents on the fair grounds itself for the duration of the event. It is important to book your stay in advance, as the hotels of Allahabad get heavily maxed out due to the large number of devotees that arrive for the two-month period. Schools of Allahabad remain closed during this period and are converted to temporary shelter homes, health care centres and other important service centres in order to ensure that Mela proceeds smoothly and without any major obstacles.
Tips
As this is one of the largest festivals in the world, there have been many stampedes in the past resulting in injuries and deaths. One must exercise caution so as to not be dragged around by the mob.
During the 6 most auspicious Snan dates of the mela, public transport is completely shut down in the city, and no vehicles are allowed anywhere. One will have to arrive at the destination on foot.
