History of Sir George Everest George Everest was a British Surveyor and geographer who served as the Surveyor General of India from 1830-1843. Largely responsible for surveying the median arc of India from its southernmost point to north Nepal, Sir Everest initially objected the honour of naming the highest peak after him. The disagreement was based on the fact that he had nothing to do with the discovery of the mountain peak. However, Everest?s name was still used as a compromise in the difficulty of finding a name and hence, Peak XV came to be known as Mount Everest.
